Lever-Operated Geotextile Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG L

Lever-Type Nominal Thickness Gauge for Geotextiles and Geomembranes

The QualiGTX™ TG L lever-operated geotextile thickness gauge measures the thickness of geotextiles and geomembranes under three specified pressures: 2 kPa, 20 kPa, and 200 kPa. It enables manufacturers, testing laboratories, and project inspectors to verify nominal material thickness against technical data sheets and contract requirements. Its lever mechanism amplifies the force generated by a compact weight set, allowing the instrument to achieve high contact pressures without requiring a bulky stack of dead weights. This design provides a stable, bench-mounted solution for geosynthetics quality control laboratories.

The instrument uses a 25 cm² presser foot, the contact area specified in ISO 9863 for geosynthetics with uniform thickness. Four interchangeable presser feet are supplied, with one fitted at a time on the single testing station. Measurements are performed sequentially, testing one specimen at a time under each pressure setting. A dial indicator with a 0 to 12 mm measuring range and 0.01 mm resolution provides direct thickness readings without electronic components or an external power supply.

Its straightforward mechanical construction simplifies operation and routine maintenance for technicians of varying experience levels. The limited number of moving components helps minimize calibration concerns and supports long-term service. The frame accommodates woven geotextiles, nonwoven fabrics, and smooth barrier sheets. Qualitest supplies the TG L for incoming material inspection, production quality control, and independent certification testing throughout North America.

Lever-Operated Geotextile Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG L Applications

The QualiGTX™ TG L is suitable for applications requiring dependable thickness measurements of geosynthetic materials under controlled compressive pressures.

  • Geotextile Manufacturing: Measures the nominal thickness of woven and nonwoven geotextiles during production and prior to shipment.

  • Geomembrane Production: Inspects the thickness of polymeric and bituminous barrier sheets used in landfill, pond, and containment lining systems.

  • Geosynthetics QC Laboratories: Provides thickness measurements for technical data sheets and material conformance reports.

  • Civil and Highway Construction: Verifies that supplied separation and filtration fabrics meet project specifications.

  • Water Conservancy and Hydraulic Works: Assesses geotextiles and membranes used in dams, canals, and embankment protection applications.

  • Hydraulic Property Testing: Determines specimen thickness required for permeability and transmissivity calculations.

  • Research and Material Development: Evaluates fabric compression behavior as applied pressure increases from 2 kPa to 200 kPa.

Standards

The QualiGTX™ TG L conforms to the internationally recognized test method for measuring geosynthetic thickness under specified compressive pressures.

  • ISO 9863 - Geosynthetics: Determination of Thickness at Specified Pressures

Lever-Operated Geotextile Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG L Key Features

The TG L integrates a mechanical lever-loading mechanism with precision dial measurement to deliver repeatable thickness results at three defined pressure levels.

  • Lever-Amplified Loading: Increases the force generated by a compact weight set, achieving pressures up to 200 kPa without bulky dead-weight assemblies.

  • Three Defined Pressure Levels: Applies 2 kPa, 20 kPa, and 200 kPa within specified tolerances to meet standard testing procedures.

  • 25 cm² Presser Foot: Provides the contact area required for thickness measurement of uniform geotextiles and geomembranes.

  • Four Interchangeable Presser Feet: Allows the operator to change presser feet as required at the single testing station, with measurements conducted individually.

  • 0.01 mm Dial Indicator Resolution: Detects small variations in material thickness across a measuring range of 0 to 12 mm.

  • Calibrated Presser Foot Weight: Each 510.2 g presser foot generates the 5 N base load required for nominal thickness measurements without additional weights.

  • Fully Mechanical Operation: Requires no electrical power or software, making setup straightforward in field laboratories and production facilities.

  • Compact, Stable Frame: Features a 40 kg bench-top construction that minimizes vibration and maintains parallel alignment between the presser foot and reference plate.

  • Simple Operating Design: Reduces operator training requirements and simplifies routine maintenance.

Theory and Method

The measured thickness of geosynthetic materials varies according to the pressure applied during testing. Nonwoven geotextiles consist of compressible fiber networks that become thinner as the applied load increases. Accordingly, standard test methods define thickness as the distance between a flat reference plate and a parallel presser foot under a specified pressure. The measurement at 2 kPa represents nominal thickness, while readings at 20 kPa and 200 kPa indicate how the material responds to higher, service-related compressive loads.

The TG L generates the required pressures using a lever-based loading principle. Since pressure is calculated by dividing force by contact area, a 25 cm² presser foot requires 5 N at 2 kPa, 50 N at 20 kPa, and 500 N at 200 kPa. Each presser foot weighs 510.2 g, producing the initial 5 N load. To reach the higher pressure levels, the operator places additional weights on the extended lever arm. This mechanism amplifies the applied force at the presser foot, enabling the instrument to achieve pressures up to 200 kPa within a tolerance of ±1 kPa.

For testing, the operator positions a conditioned specimen on the reference plate and carefully lowers the presser foot onto its surface. Once the applied load has stabilized, typically after 30 seconds in accordance with ISO 9863, the technician records the thickness directly from the dial indicator. The procedure is repeated at the next pressure level using the same specimen or a fresh one. Results from multiple specimens are averaged to establish a representative thickness value for the sample roll.
