IPX3 IPX4 Hand-Held Spray Nozzle - Quali-IPX™ SN

The Quali-IPX™ SN is a hand-held IPX3 and IPX4 spray nozzle that checks how well an enclosure resists sprayed and splashing water, wherever a technician can reach with a hose. Its brass head contains 121 ports, each 0.5 mm in diameter, laid out in the pattern shown in Figure 5 of IEC 60529. For IPX3 testing, a counterweighted shield drops over part of the port array. For IPX4, the shield withdraws completely. A pressure gauge mounted beside the nozzle lets the operator read delivery pressure while spraying.

IEC 60529 permits either an oscillating tube or a spray nozzle for numerals 3 and 4. The nozzle is the preferred option when the specimen is large or irregularly shaped. The Quali-IPX™ SN requires no chamber, no tube arc, and no fixed installation, so technicians can work around a floor-standing cabinet, a mounted luminaire, or a machine that is already in place. A ball valve and a flow control knob at the handle set the delivery rate.

Laboratories that run IPX3 or IPX4 tests only occasionally often find a full oscillating tube system hard to justify. The Quali-IPX™ SN offers these teams a compliant test device with a much smaller footprint and cost. Field service groups and installers can also use it to verify enclosures after mounting, instead of shipping units back to a laboratory. The brass head resists the corrosion that repeated wetting can cause.

IPX3 IPX4 Hand-Held Spray Nozzle - Quali-IPX™ SN Applications

The Quali-IPX™ SN is suited to manufacturers, test houses, and field teams that need to verify an IPX3 or IPX4 rating. Its hand-held design makes it possible to test specimens that cannot fit in a chamber or sit on a turntable.

  • Luminaire and Outdoor Lighting: Sprays wall packs, floodlights, and pole-mounted fixtures to the IEC 60598-1 ingress requirements, including fixtures that are already installed.
  • Household Appliance Testing: Checks appliance housings and controls against the splash conditions in IEC 60335-1.
  • Power Tool Manufacturing: Tests hand-held motor-operated tools covered by IEC 60745-1, where the enclosure shape rarely suits a fixed arc.
  • Wiring Devices and Switches: Qualifies appliance switches under VDE 0630 and fixed installation switches under VDE 0632.
  • Rotating Electrical Machines: Sprays motor and generator housings covered by IEC 60034 that are too large for the working volume of a chamber.
  • Large Electrical Cabinets and Enclosures: Covers distribution boards and control cabinets that are too big to mount on a turntable.
  • Field Verification and Installation Sign-Off: Confirms ingress performance on site after mounting, with no need to return the unit to a laboratory.
  • Third-Party Certification Laboratories: Serves as the alternative test device that IEC 60529 allows when specimen geometry rules out the oscillating tube.

Standards

The Quali-IPX™ SN is designed to match the spray nozzle geometry and test conditions defined in the standards below. Each of these documents refers to the sprayed or splashing water test specified by the IP code.

  • IEC 60034 - Rotating Electrical Machines
  • IEC 60335-1 - Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Safety, Part 1: General Requirements
  • IEC 60529 - Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures (IP Code)
  • IEC 60598-1 - Luminaires, Part 1: General Requirements and Tests
  • IEC 60745-1 - Hand-Held Motor-Operated Electric Tools, Safety, Part 1: General Requirements
  • VDE 0630 (DIN EN 61058-1) - Switches for Appliances, Part 1: General Requirements
  • VDE 0632 (DIN EN 60669-1) - Switches for Household and Similar Fixed Electrical Installations, Part 1: General Requirements

IPX3 IPX4 Hand-Held Spray Nozzle - Quali-IPX™ SN Key Features

Qualitest designed the Quali-IPX™ SN as a self-contained test device that needs only a connection to a laboratory water supply. Every control the operator needs is within reach of the handle.

  • 121-Port Brass Spray Head: Reproduces the port pattern from IEC 60529 Figure 5, so the water condition matches the standard exactly instead of approximating it.
  • Counterweighted Movable Shield: Switches between IPX3 and IPX4 by hand in seconds. The counterweight keeps the shield in position so it does not drift during a test.
  • Integrated Pressure Gauge: Shows delivery pressure at the point of use across a 0 to 1.6 bar span, which covers the range the method requires with headroom to spare.
  • Ball Valve Flow Regulation: The flow control knob adjusts the delivery rate at the handle, so operators can correct drift without walking back to a supply valve.
  • Hand-Held Format: Reaches specimens that cannot fit in a chamber, mount on a turntable, or sit within a tube arc.
  • Brass Construction: Resists corrosion under repeated wetting and preserves the port geometry the test relies on.
  • Hose Connector Supply: Connects to a standard laboratory water supply, so no dedicated plumbing or installation work is needed.

Theory and Method

IEC 60529 recognizes two devices for numerals 3 and 4. Both create the same water condition by different means. An oscillating tube sweeps a fixed arc around a specimen that rotates beneath it. A hand-held nozzle works the other way: the operator moves the spray pattern around the enclosure. The standard treats the two results as equivalent and names the nozzle as the preferred choice when a tube cannot wet every part of the enclosure.

The port pattern is what makes the test work. A center hole, an inner ring, and outer rings of ports spread across a spherical face produce a cone of jets instead of a single stream, so water reaches the specimen from a range of angles at once. Flow is set to roughly 10 L/min, with delivery pressure held between 50 kPa and 150 kPa, and the gauge at the handle displays this pressure. Together, these two values determine the momentum each jet carries when it strikes the enclosure.

The shield distinguishes the two test levels. When positioned over the outer ports, it narrows the active pattern so water reaches the specimen only within 60° of vertical, which is the IPX3 condition. Withdrawing the shield opens the full array and lets water arrive from any practicable direction, which is what numeral 4 means by splashing. The counterweight holds the shield steady in either position, so the operator does not have to fight it while working around a specimen.
