Drop Dart Impact Tester Features and Advantages

The DX-8300 Series Dart Impact Tester complies with ASTM D1709 Methods A and B, the standard test method for free-falling dart impact testing of plastic films. Designed for accurate and efficient impact resistance evaluation, each model includes advanced features to support quality control, research, and production testing.

Advanced Technical Features

  • Fully electronic operation with integrated safety features for reliable and secure testing

  • PC and software connectivity for streamlined data management and test control

  • Advanced DX-8300 Dart Drop Software from Qualitest North America automates Pass/Fail and Staircase testing procedures while supporting ASTM D1709 testing requirements

Effortless Pneumatic-Assisted Operation

The DX-8300 Series features pneumatic-assisted dart release and film/sheet sample clamping for smooth and efficient operation. This system provides consistent clamping force without requiring large electromagnetic release mechanisms, helping improve test reliability and operator convenience.

Flexible Testing Options for Method A & B Applications

Designed for versatility, the DX-8300 Series includes models configured for Method A testing or combined Method A and B testing. Optional dart stems, weights, and extensions are available to support customized testing requirements and a wide range of film and sheet applications.

Cost-Effective Impact Testing Solution

The DX-8300 Series delivers reliable dart impact testing performance with an economical design and a complete setup for efficient material evaluation. Upgrade your film and sheet testing capabilities with the Drop Dart Impact Tester DX-8300 Series from Qualitest North America.

Mechanical Principles of Controlled Gravity and Specimen Clamping

The Qualitest Drop Dart Impact Tester DX-8300 Series uses a precise gravity-driven impact method to evaluate whether thin plastic films, sheets, and packaging materials can withstand sudden physical stress.

Unlike manual weight drop methods that may introduce operator-related variations, the DX-8300 Series provides consistent and repeatable impact testing by releasing a weighted dart from a controlled vertical height. During each test, the rounded dart nose creates a high-speed impact that applies concentrated force to the specimen, allowing manufacturers to measure how materials respond to stretching, deformation, and potential failure.

Accurate results depend on keeping the test specimen securely positioned throughout the impact event. Any movement or slipping of the film can absorb impact energy and affect test accuracy. To minimize this risk, the DX-8300 Series features a pneumatic-assisted clamping system designed to apply uniform holding pressure around the specimen.

The system operates with 60 psi dry, filtered air to provide reliable sample fixation and consistent testing conditions. A clean pneumatic dart release mechanism also helps maintain a true free-fall path by eliminating interference during dart release, ensuring accurate impact resistance measurements.

ASTM D1709 Parameters: Method A vs. Method B

ASTM D1709 defines two testing methods for evaluating the impact resistance of plastic films based on material strength and application requirements. The DX-8300 Series offers models configured for Method A or combined Method A & B testing.

  • Method A (Model DX-8385-A): Designed for thinner plastic films, packaging materials, and everyday flexible applications. This method uses a 38.1 mm diameter phenolic or aluminum dart nose released from a controlled height of 26 inches (66 cm).

  • Method B (Available on Model DX-8385-AB): Suitable for stronger and heavier plastic films and sheets. It uses a larger 50.8 mm stainless steel dart nose released from a height of 60 inches (152 cm). The DX-8385-AB combination model allows users to perform both Method A and Method B tests using a single expandable testing system.

For reliable impact testing, the dart must strike the specimen accurately and vertically. The DX-8300 Series supports controlled dart release options, including safety actuators and electronic footswitch operation, helping reduce inconsistencies commonly associated with manual release methods.

The Staircase Method: Determining the 50% Failure Threshold

The Staircase Method is a statistical testing approach used to determine the impact energy level at which 50% of specimens fail and 50% successfully withstand the impact.

During the test sequence, the dart weight is adjusted based on the previous result. If a specimen fails, the dart weight is reduced by a specific increment before testing a new sample. If the specimen passes, additional weight is added for the next test. This process continues until enough pass and fail results are collected, typically reaching a statistically meaningful set of data.

Manually recording results and calculating the final impact value can be time-consuming and increases the possibility of calculation errors. The DX-8300 Dart Drop Software simplifies this process by connecting directly to a laboratory PC, automatically recording pass/fail results, performing calculations, and generating accurate impact resistance data.

By providing precise impact failure measurements, the DX-8300 Series helps manufacturers evaluate whether flexible packaging materials can withstand real-world conditions such as handling, transportation, and accidental drops during use.
