Solvent Rub Resistance Tester – MEK Tester QualiMEK™

The Solvent Rub Resistance Tester – MEK Tester QualiMEK™ is designed in accordance with ASTM D4752 and NCCA11-18, Test Method for Measuring MEK Resistance of Ethyl Silicate (Inorganic) Zinc-Rich Primers by Solvent Rub. The tester uses methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) as the solvent to evaluate the solvent resistance and curing level of paint topcoats and primers. It provides a controlled method for assessing coating performance and determining whether the coating has achieved the required level of cure.

ASTM D4752 evaluates the solvent resistance of a baked coating film by rubbing its surface with cheesecloth saturated with methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) until the film shows failure or breakdown. The test specifies key parameters, including the cheesecloth type, stroke distance, stroke rate, and applied pressure, to help maintain consistent testing conditions. One double rub consists of one forward stroke followed by one backward stroke.

Widely used in the paint and coatings industry, this method provides a rapid, relative assessment of coating cure level without requiring extended exposure periods. Testing of two-component zinc-rich primers has also demonstrated good correlation between MEK solvent rub resistance and cure levels determined through diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS).

Solvent Rub Resistance Tester: Verify Coating Cure with Consistent Testing

A solvent rub resistance tester provides coating engineers and quality control teams with a practical way to evaluate coating cure and solvent resistance. Rather than relying solely on extended exposure testing, the instrument measures the number of rubs a coating can withstand before visible damage or failure occurs. The resulting rub count can help assess whether a coating has reached the required cure level for subsequent processing or service.

The QualiMEK™ Solvent Rub Resistance Tester automates the rubbing process by moving a solvent-saturated cloth across a coated surface at a controlled speed, load, and stroke distance. It records the number of double rubs, with one forward and one backward stroke counted as a single double rub. Automated movement helps minimize variations associated with manual testing and supports more consistent results between test runs.

How a Solvent Rub Resistance Tester Works

A solvent rub resistance tester determines how many rubbing cycles a coating film can withstand when exposed to a specified solvent. As the solvent interacts with the coating, an under-cured or insufficiently crosslinked film may soften, weaken, or show visible damage more quickly than a properly cured film.

The Science Behind Solvent Rub Testing

Thermoset coatings such as epoxy, polyester, alkyd, urethane, and vinyl ester systems undergo chemical reactions during curing that create connections between polymer chains. These crosslinks form a three-dimensional polymer network that contributes to the coating's mechanical and chemical resistance.

When a solvent such as methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) contacts the coating, it can penetrate the polymer matrix and cause swelling or softening. A well-cured coating has a stronger crosslinked structure that limits this effect, while an insufficiently cured coating may soften or deteriorate more rapidly under repeated rubbing.

Consequently, the number of double rubs a coating withstands can provide a useful indication of its relative cure level. A higher rub count may indicate greater resistance to solvent action, while a lower result can signal the need to review curing conditions such as time, temperature, or formulation parameters.

How the QualiMEK™ Performs the Test

The operator secures a coated test panel on the glass work platform. A rubbing head fitted with solvent-saturated cheesecloth or another specified material moves across the coating under controlled test conditions.

The microcomputer-controlled system allows the operator to configure relevant testing parameters, including rubbing speed, cycle count, and stroke distance. Once the test begins, the rubbing head moves forward and backward at the selected speed, while the LCD displays the test information.

One complete forward-and-backward movement is recorded as one double rub. The test can be stopped when visible coating damage occurs or when the programmed cycle count is reached. The tested area can then be evaluated against an untreated portion of the panel according to the applicable test method or coating specification.

Benefits of Automated Solvent Rub Testing

Manual solvent rub testing can introduce differences in rubbing speed, applied force, stroke distance, and testing technique. An automated tester controls these operating parameters mechanically, helping reduce operator-related variation.

This controlled approach is particularly useful for laboratories and quality control departments that need repeatable testing across different operators, production batches, testing sessions, or facilities.

Solvent Rub Resistance Tester Applications and Industries

Solvent rub testing is used across industries where coating cure, solvent resistance, and finishing quality need to be evaluated.

1. Protective Coatings and Corrosion Protection

Ethyl silicate zinc-rich primers are widely used as protective coatings for steel structures. ASTM D4752 provides a solvent rub method for evaluating the MEK resistance of these inorganic zinc-rich primers. Testing can help determine whether the primer has reached the required cure level before subsequent coating operations.

2. Automotive and Industrial Coatings

Automotive components and industrial parts may use epoxy primers, polyester coatings, acrylic systems, and clearcoats. Solvent rub testing can help quality control teams evaluate coating cure and verify the consistency of curing processes.

3. Powder Coatings

Thermoset powder coatings, including epoxy, polyester, hybrid, and urethane formulations, require controlled heating to achieve the desired cure. Solvent rub testing can be used to evaluate coating resistance and help identify variations in curing conditions.

4. Printing and Packaging

Solvent resistance testing can also be relevant to inks and coated substrates used in printing and packaging applications. Testing helps evaluate whether the cured ink or coating provides the required resistance to solvents encountered during processing or use.

5. Specialty Coatings

Manufacturers of specialty coating systems can use solvent rub testing to compare coating cure and resistance between formulations, production batches, or different curing conditions. The applicable solvent, number of rubs, and acceptance criteria should always be established according to the relevant standard or product specification.

How to Select a Solvent Rub Resistance Tester

Selecting a solvent rub resistance tester depends on the applicable testing standards, coating materials, required test conditions, and laboratory workload.

Match the Tester to the Applicable Standard

Begin by identifying the standard or customer specification governing the test. ASTM D4752 defines specific test conditions for evaluating the MEK resistance of ethyl silicate inorganic zinc-rich primers. Other solvent rub procedures may specify different solvents, loads, stroke distances, speeds, or acceptance criteria.

Before selecting an instrument, verify that its rubbing load, stroke distance, speed range, and test configuration meet the requirements of the intended method.

Evaluate Speed Control

A tester with adjustable speed provides greater flexibility for different testing procedures and internal specifications. The QualiMEK™ offers a variable speed range of 5–95 c.p.m., allowing users to configure the rubbing rate according to their testing requirements.

Consider Cycle Control and Parameter Storage

For laboratories performing repeated tests, programmable cycle control and parameter storage can simplify routine operation. The QualiMEK™ uses a microcomputer control system with an LCD display for parameter configuration and test monitoring.

Consider Work Platform and Power Requirements

A glass work platform provides a smooth surface that is convenient to clean after testing. The QualiMEK™ also supports a 110–220V, 50/60Hz power supply, providing compatibility with a broad range of electrical systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does a Solvent Rub Resistance Tester Measure?

A solvent rub resistance tester measures the ability of a coating film to withstand repeated rubbing with a specified solvent. The resulting rub count can provide a relative indication of coating cure and solvent resistance when evaluated according to the applicable test method.

What Is the Difference Between ASTM D4752 and ASTM D5402?

ASTM D4752 is specifically associated with measuring MEK resistance of ethyl silicate inorganic zinc-rich primers using a solvent rub procedure. ASTM D5402 provides a broader solvent rub testing method for organic coatings, with the specific solvent and acceptance requirements determined by the applicable coating specification.

How Many MEK Double Rubs Indicate a Fully Cured Coating?

There is no single universal double-rub value that defines a fully cured coating for every formulation. The required result depends on the coating chemistry, film thickness, applicable standard, and product specification. Results should therefore be compared with the requirements established for the specific coating system.

Can Solvents Other Than MEK Be Used?

The solvent used depends on the applicable test method and coating specification. MEK is commonly used for solvent rub testing, while other solvents may be specified for particular coating systems or evaluation procedures. Always follow the requirements of the relevant standard or manufacturer's specification.

Why Can Manual and Automated Solvent Rub Tests Produce Different Results?

Manual testing can introduce variations in stroke speed, applied pressure, stroke distance, and solvent saturation. An automated tester controls key mechanical parameters, helping reduce operator-related variation and improve consistency between test runs.

What Maintenance Does a Solvent Rub Resistance Tester Require?

Routine maintenance generally includes cleaning the glass work platform, checking the rubbing head and moving components, and inspecting test accessories for wear or contamination. Test materials such as cheesecloth should be replaced according to the applicable procedure. Equipment should also be operated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and appropriate laboratory safety practices when working with solvents.
