RDE-OES Standard Elemental Analyzer – QualiRDE™ 800

The QualiRDE™ 800 RDE-OES Standard Elemental Analyzer delivers rapid elemental screening for in-service oils and related industrial fluids. It is built for laboratories and maintenance teams that require fast identification of wear metals, contaminants, and additive elements without time-consuming sample preparation. Using rotating disc electrode optical emission spectrometry, the system provides multi-element results in under 30 seconds, supporting quicker decisions in maintenance planning and fluid condition assessment.

Designed for demanding analytical environments, this RDE-OES platform supports routine oil analysis across power generation, transportation, aerospace, defense, and heavy equipment maintenance sectors. It features a 500 mm focal length optical system, holographic diffraction grating, high-speed data acquisition, and user-friendly software that ensures consistent performance in busy laboratory workflows.

The QualiRDE™ 800 is a compact solution for fast detection of metallic wear debris, contamination, and additive chemistry in used lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and selected fuel samples. It is well suited for predictive maintenance programs, condition monitoring, incoming fluid verification, and troubleshooting applications where speed and multi-element detection are critical.

This system enables direct oil analysis without dilution, chemical reagents, or auxiliary gases. Its advanced optical design supports wide spectral coverage, while the integrated software manages calibration, data processing, statistical evaluation, and reporting. The result is a reliable RDE-OES solution for organizations focused on monitoring equipment health and tracking fluid degradation trends with efficiency and accuracy.

RDE-OES Standard Elemental Analyzer – QualiRDE™ 800 Applications

  • Used Lubricating Oil Analysis: The QualiRDE™ 800 is designed for elemental evaluation of in-service lubricating oils to identify abnormal wear, contamination, and additive depletion. It helps maintenance teams monitor equipment condition, recognize early wear trends, and support preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.

  • Hydraulic Fluid Monitoring: Hydraulic systems benefit from rapid detection of metallic particles and contaminants that may signal component wear or fluid breakdown. Routine RDE-OES analysis supports early identification of issues in pumps, valves, and hydraulic circuits, improving maintenance response time.

  • Fuel Contamination Screening: In applicable diesel and gas turbine fuel workflows, the system supports elemental screening for contamination aligned with ASTM D6728-type requirements. This helps detect corrosive elements and metallic impurities that can impact fuel quality and equipment reliability.

  • Aerospace, Defense, Power, and Transportation Programs: This analyzer is widely used across aerospace, defense, power generation, and transportation sectors. These industries rely on fluid analysis to assess the condition of engines, turbines, gear systems, and hydraulic components operating under continuous load.

  • High-Volume Maintenance Laboratories: With analysis times under 30 seconds and no sample preparation required, the system is well suited for laboratories handling large sample volumes. The fast workflow improves turnaround time and supports consistent trend analysis across extensive equipment fleets.

Standards

  • ASTM D6595 – Standard test method for determining wear metals and contaminants in used lubricating oils or used hydraulic fluids using rotating disc electrode atomic emission spectrometry. This method is widely applied for condition monitoring and wear trend analysis in in-service lubricants and hydraulic systems.

  • ASTM D6728 – Standard test method for detecting contaminants in gas turbine and diesel engine fuels using rotating disc electrode atomic emission spectrometry. It is used to identify elemental contamination that may affect fuel quality, combustion efficiency, and equipment reliability.

  • Wear, contamination, and additive monitoring: Enables measurement of wear metals, contamination levels, and additive elements to support comprehensive fluid condition assessment and predictive maintenance programs.

Theory and Method

RDE-OES (rotating disc electrode optical emission spectrometry) is an analytical technique used to determine metallic elements in oils and fuels by exciting the sample and measuring the characteristic light emitted by each element. It is widely applied for rapid multi-element detection of wear metals, contaminants, and additive elements in in-service fluids.

During analysis, a rotating graphite disc introduces a thin film of the sample into the excitation zone. As the sample is energized, it emits light at specific wavelengths corresponding to individual elements. The spectrometer detects these wavelengths and converts them into concentration values, enabling fast screening with minimal sample preparation. This makes the method well suited for routine maintenance and condition monitoring applications.

The QualiRDE™ 8000 applies this measurement principle using a holographic grating-based optical system combined with microprocessor-controlled data acquisition. Its software supports calibration management, statistical evaluation, standardization routines, and result reporting functions. Together, these capabilities help ensure stable performance and consistent analytical results across repeated testing cycles.
