RDE-OES Precision Arc Elemental Analyzer – QualiRDE™ 800H

The QualiRDE™ 800H RDE-OES Precision Arc Elemental Analyzer delivers fast and accurate elemental analysis of lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, and other service fluids. Designed for maintenance programs and laboratory environments, it measures wear metals, contaminants, and additive elements directly from the sample without dilution, auxiliary gases, or chemical reagents. With analysis completed in less than 30 seconds, detection limits below 1 ppm, and repeatability within ±10%, it supports efficient condition monitoring and predictive maintenance strategies.

Built around Rotating Disc Electrode Optical Emission Spectroscopy (RDE-OES), the QualiRDE™ 800H combines digital arc source control with advanced CCD-based optics to provide reliable multi-element analysis. It delivers rapid insight into lubricant health, equipment wear, and contamination levels, helping organizations strengthen asset reliability and reduce unexpected downtime.

This compact analyzer is specifically developed for direct analysis of used lubricating oils and hydraulic fluids. It identifies metallic wear particles, additive packages, and contamination elements directly from the sample cup, eliminating lengthy preparation procedures. Its streamlined design reduces footprint and weight while maintaining broad elemental coverage for routine laboratory testing.

The optical system features a 500 mm focal length, high-resolution CCD detector architecture, and a Paschen-Runge spectrometer design integrated with a Roland circle configuration. A multi-block CCD detection system, temperature-controlled optics, and comprehensive software for method creation, statistical evaluation, data management, and report generation contribute to consistent analytical performance. These capabilities make the QualiRDE™ 800H an effective solution for oil condition monitoring, wear metal analysis, and elemental testing in industrial, commercial, and reliability-focused laboratories.

RDE-OES Precision Arc Elemental Analyzer – QualiRDE™ 800H Applications

  • Used Lubricating Oil Analysis: The QualiRDE™ 800H is designed for elemental analysis of used lubricating oils, helping laboratories and maintenance teams detect abnormal equipment wear, contamination, and changes in additive levels. It supports ASTM D6595 testing requirements for wear metals and contaminants in used oils and hydraulic fluids.

  • Used Hydraulic Fluid Monitoring: Ideal for hydraulic system condition assessment, the analyzer measures metallic particles and contamination levels that may indicate component wear, fluid degradation, or cleanliness issues. This information supports proactive maintenance and system reliability programs.

  • Fuel Contamination Screening: The analyzer can be applied to selected fuel testing applications, including the detection of contamination and corrosion-related elements in diesel engine and gas turbine fuels. This helps identify potential fuel quality concerns before they affect equipment performance.

  • Predictive Maintenance and Reliability Programs: By tracking wear metals such as iron, copper, chromium, and other key elements, the QualiRDE™ 800H provides valuable trend data for predictive maintenance strategies. Early detection of abnormal wear supports better maintenance scheduling, reduced downtime, and improved asset performance.

  • Industrial and Commercial Laboratories: Suitable for laboratories serving industries such as manufacturing, transportation, energy, marine, defense, mining, and heavy equipment operations. The analyzer supports routine oil condition monitoring, wear metal analysis, contamination assessment, and reliability-focused testing programs.

Standards

  • ASTM D6595 – Standard Test Method for Determination of Wear Metals, Contaminants, and Additive Elements in Used Lubricating Oils and Used Hydraulic Fluids by Rotating Disc Electrode Atomic Emission Spectrometry (RDE-AES).

  • ASTM D6728 – Standard Test Method for Determination of Contaminants in Gas Turbine and Diesel Engine Fuels by Rotating Disc Electrode Atomic Emission Spectrometry (RDE-AES).

Theory and Method

RDE-OES (Rotating Disc Electrode Optical Emission Spectroscopy) is a proven elemental analysis technique used to measure wear metals, contaminants, and additive elements in lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, and selected fuel samples. The method works by exciting the sample with an electrical discharge and measuring the characteristic light emitted by each element at specific wavelengths. ASTM D6595 and ASTM D6728 recognize this analytical approach for rapid multi-element testing of oils and fuels.

During analysis, the sample is delivered to the excitation zone through a rotating disc electrode. The energized sample emits light signatures that are collected by the optical system and processed by the detector. The QualiRDE™ 800H integrates advanced CCD-based spectral acquisition, digital arc source control, and high-resolution optics to deliver accurate and repeatable elemental measurements across a broad wavelength range.

The system supports direct sample analysis without dilution, auxiliary gases, solvents, or chemical reagents. This streamlined workflow reduces preparation time and accelerates testing, making it well suited for routine oil condition monitoring, wear metal analysis, contamination assessment, and predictive maintenance programs. Integrated software tools simplify method configuration, calibration management, data evaluation, and report generation, helping laboratories achieve efficient and consistent analytical performance.
