Motorized Geosynthetic Permeability Tester – QualiGTX™ GPT M

The QualiGTX™ GPT M motorized geosynthetic permeability tester measures vertical water flow through geotextiles, geocomposites, and other related materials using automated hydraulic head adjustment. Qualitest North America designed the motorized water level control to simplify constant-head testing, which requires measurements at multiple hydraulic head heights. Manually repositioning an overflow between readings takes additional time and can affect repeatability. The integrated control system automatically moves the water level to each selected setting, while the 10-inch touchscreen provides convenient access to test configuration, timing, and flow volume readings.

Designed for laboratories conducting tests to hydraulic engineering specifications, the QualiGTX™ GPT M provides permeability data for seepage calculations and engineering analysis rather than simple pass-or-fail evaluations. Its specimen clamp features a 20 cm² test area constructed from 304 stainless steel. An integrated supply tank automatically maintains the water supply throughout collection. The heating and cooling system regulates water temperature from 5 °C to 60 °C, with a display resolution of 0.1 °C. Additionally, a dissolved oxygen analyzer measures concentrations from 0 to 20 mg/L to document water conditions before testing.

The tester digitally displays the volume of water passing through the specimen during the test and provides automatic timing up to 999 s. Its cabinet dimensions of 750 × 720 mm match the other equipment in the QualiGGTE bench range. The system operates on 220 V single-phase power, with the motorized head assembly bringing its total weight to 150 kg. Installation requires neither compressed air nor a dedicated water supply line. For laboratories performing permeability measurements at multiple hydraulic head levels, automated adjustment significantly reduces testing time and manual intervention.

Motorized Geosynthetic Permeability Tester – QualiGTX™ GPT M Applications

The QualiGTX™ GPT M is designed for laboratories supporting water infrastructure and hydraulic engineering projects, where geosynthetic permeability measurements provide essential input for engineering design and seepage calculations.

  • Dam and Reservoir Engineering: Evaluating filter and drainage geosynthetics against seepage models for embankments and core zones.

  • Canal and Irrigation Systems: Measuring the flow capacity of lining and drainage layers exposed to continuous water loss risks.

  • Water Conservancy Project Laboratories: Conducting tests according to hydraulic engineering specifications that require multi-point hydraulic head data in reported results.

  • Flood Defense and Levee Construction: Assessing filter fabrics installed behind revetments, toe drains, and cut-off structures.

  • Hydropower Civil Works: Qualifying drainage and separation materials used in headrace, tailrace, and spillway construction.

  • Geocomposite Drainage Products: Measuring cross-plane water flow through laminated and multilayer drainage materials.

  • Geosynthetics Manufacturing: Performing production quality testing and providing complete head-versus-flow curves with technical datasheets.

  • Consulting and Design Laboratories: Generating permeability data for seepage and filtration analysis involving water-retaining structures.

  • Research and Method Development: Studying hydraulic flow behavior across different hydraulic gradients in newly developed material constructions.

Motorized Geosynthetic Permeability Tester – QualiGTX™ GPT M Key Features

The QualiGTX™ GPT M simplifies multi-point permeability testing through automated hydraulic head adjustment, integrated water conditioning, and touchscreen operation. Its features help laboratories maintain consistent testing conditions while reducing manual procedures.

  • Motorized Water Level Adjustment: Automatically moves the hydraulic head to each programmed height without manual repositioning, allowing multi-level permeability testing to proceed as a continuous sequence rather than requiring repeated manual setups.

  • Automatic Water Supply with Source Tank: Supplies the test cell from an integrated reservoir during water collection, maintaining the required water level without continuous manual replenishment.

  • 10-Inch Touchscreen Control: Combines hydraulic head settings, test timing, and measurement results on one interface, helping maintain consistent procedures between operators.

  • Automatic Digital Timing: Provides automatic collection timing across a range of up to 999 s, reducing measurement variations caused by operator reaction time.

  • Digital Flow Volume Display: Displays the volume of water passing through the specimen throughout the test, allowing operators to monitor measurement progress in real time.

  • Heating and Cooling Temperature Control: Regulates water temperature between 5 °C and 60 °C, providing stable and controlled conditions for subsequent correction to the 20 °C reference temperature.

  • 0.1 °C Temperature Resolution: Provides precise temperature readings to support reliable water viscosity correction during permeability calculations.

  • Dissolved Oxygen Analyzer: Measures and reports dissolved oxygen in mg/L, percent saturation, and partial pressure, with an accuracy of ±1.5 % FS, allowing water quality conditions to be documented in the test record.

  • 304 Stainless Steel Specimen Clamp: Provides a consistent seal around the 20 cm² test area while resisting corrosion and dimensional distortion during continuous exposure to water.

  • Standard Bench Footprint: Features a 750 × 720 mm cabinet and operates on 220 V single-phase power, matching the other equipment in the QualiGGTE permeability testing range for convenient laboratory layout planning.

Theory and Method

Vertical permeability testing evaluates the relationship between hydraulic head and the resulting water flow through a geosynthetic specimen rather than relying on a single measurement. Constant-head testing establishes this relationship by maintaining different hydraulic head levels in sequence and recording the corresponding discharge at each setting. Plotting hydraulic head against flow velocity and fitting a line through the origin provides a more reliable basis for determining the permeability coefficient than relying on an individual reading at one head height. The QualiGTX™ GPT M uses motorized adjustment to reach each selected head level automatically, making multi-point measurements more practical and efficient.

The resulting plot also helps determine whether the specimen continues to follow Darcy's law. Under Darcy flow conditions, the relationship remains linear: doubling the hydraulic gradient produces twice the discharge. However, highly open, coarse geosynthetic materials may allow water to pass rapidly enough for turbulent flow to develop at higher hydraulic heads. When this occurs, the plot deviates from its linear pattern. Identifying this change requires measurements across multiple head levels, demonstrating the practical advantage of motorized adjustment compared with a fixed overflow arrangement.

Two additional conditions must remain controlled during permeability measurements. First, water viscosity decreases as temperature increases, making correction to the 20 °C reference temperature necessary. Accurate correction depends on reliable temperature measurement. The QualiGTX™ GPT M provides 0.1 °C display resolution across its operating temperature range of 5 °C to 60 °C. Second, dissolved air must be considered because gas released from the water can form bubbles inside the specimen's pores, restricting flow and reducing measured permeability. The integrated dissolved oxygen analyzer records this water condition before the collection process begins.
