Manual Geotextile Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG 40

The QualiGTX™ TG 40 manual geotextile thickness gauge determines the nominal thickness of geotextiles and geomembranes at pressures of 2 kPa, 20 kPa, and 200 kPa. Its lever-and-dead-weight mechanism applies each pressure stage without motors, load cells, or an electrical power supply. A 25 cm² presser foot contacts the specimen while calibrated weights acting through the lever arm generate the required pressure. Manufacturers, contractors, and construction materials laboratories use this instrument for incoming material inspection and routine production quality checks.

The lever-based loading system keeps the instrument compact while generating the required force. Applying 200 kPa across a 25 cm² presser foot requires 500 N at the specimen, equivalent to approximately 51 kg of dead weight if placed directly above it. The extended loading arm multiplies the applied force, reducing the weight set to a manageable size that a technician can lift with one hand. Despite its loading capacity, the complete instrument weighs 40 kg and occupies a bench area of 1050 × 520 mm.

A dial indicator measures thickness over a range of 0 to 12 mm, with graduations of 0.01 mm. This range accommodates materials from thin liner sheets to heavy nonwoven fabrics. Testing involves placing the specimen on the reference plate, lowering the presser foot, adding the appropriate weight for the required pressure stage, and recording the measurement after the specified dwell period. Laboratories seeking compliance with established test methods without electronic systems, load cell calibration, or software validation can use the QualiGTX™ TG 40 for routine thickness determination.

Manual Geotextile Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG 40 Applications

The QualiGTX™ TG 40 is suitable for operations that regularly measure geosynthetic thickness and do not require automated loading or electronic data recording.

  • Geotextile Manufacturing: Verifies that woven and nonwoven roll materials maintain their nominal thickness at 2 kPa throughout production runs.

  • Geomembrane and Liner Production: Checks the thickness of smooth polymeric sheets during extrusion and calendering as part of routine shift-level quality control.

  • Contractor Incoming Inspection: Enables site and yard laboratories to verify delivered materials against specified requirements before installation.

  • Construction Materials Laboratories: Expands general laboratory testing capabilities to include geosynthetic thickness measurement without adding a powered instrument to the calibration schedule.

  • Landfill and Containment Projects: Verifies liner, cushion, and separation layers against project documentation during material acceptance.

  • Road, Railway, and Embankment Works: Measures separation and reinforcement geotextiles supplied for subgrade applications.

  • Hydraulic and Irrigation Engineering: Evaluates canal and reservoir lining materials when thickness is relevant to permeability and durability assessment.

  • Training and Teaching Laboratories: Demonstrates how geosynthetic thickness changes under different pressures using equipment with a visible loading mechanism.

Standards

The QualiGTX™ TG 40 determines geosynthetic thickness in accordance with the recognized international test method.

  • ISO 9863 – Geosynthetics: Determination of Thickness at Specified Pressures.

Manual Geotextile Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG 40 Key Features

The QualiGTX™ TG 40 supports three-stage pressure testing through a mechanical design that eliminates electronics from the loading system.

  • Lever-Amplified Loading: Multiplies the applied weight through an extended lever arm, allowing the instrument to reach 200 kPa without requiring an excessively large or heavy weight stack.

  • Three Standard Pressure Stages: Supports testing at 2 kPa, 20 kPa, and 200 kPa to match the pressure sequence required by multi-pressure test methods.

  • Dead-Weight Force Generation: Establishes pressure using calibrated masses rather than an electronic transducer, eliminating the need for electronic recalibration.

  • Self-Weighted 2 kPa Presser Foot: Uses the 510.2 g presser foot alone to establish the initial pressure stage, maintaining a tolerance of ±0.01 kPa.

  • 25 cm² Presser Foot: Provides the contact area specified for general geosynthetic thickness determination.

  • 0 to 12 mm Dial Indicator: Measures thickness in 0.01 mm increments across a range suitable for thin membranes and heavy nonwoven fabrics.

  • No Power Supply Required: Operates without an electrical connection, making it suitable for site laboratories and material inspection areas.

  • Simple Mechanical Construction: Minimizes the number of wearing parts and keeps the loading process visible, helping reduce operator training time.

  • Compact Bench Frame: Occupies a 1050 × 520 mm footprint and weighs 40 kg, allowing it to share bench space with other quality control instruments.

Theory and Method

Geosynthetic thickness depends on the applied pressure rather than representing a single fixed dimension. Nonwoven fabrics and needle-punched materials can compress significantly as the load increases. Therefore, a thickness measurement is meaningful only when accompanied by the pressure at which it was obtained. Standard test methods control three key variables: the presser foot contact area, the applied pressure, and the duration for which that pressure is maintained. The measured thickness is the perpendicular distance between the reference plate and the presser foot at the end of the specified dwell period.

Dead-weight loading provides a direct method of establishing a known pressure because the applied force is determined by mass and gravity. This approach requires no load cell or electronic system to recalibrate. The presser foot itself weighs 510.2 g, generating a force of 5 N over its 25 cm² contact area and producing exactly 2 kPa on the specimen. Consequently, the initial pressure stage requires no additional weights, and the pressure tolerance remains within ±0.01 kPa because the presser foot mass is fixed.

The lever mechanism generates the higher pressure stages while keeping the required weights manageable. A lever balances moments around its pivot, allowing a weight positioned farther from the fulcrum to produce a greater force at the shorter arm supporting the presser foot. The extended loading arm enables a relatively small weight set to generate 50 N for the 20 kPa stage and 500 N for the 200 kPa stage. The respective pressure tolerances are ±0.1 kPa and ±1 kPa. Applying these forces directly to the specimen would require a weight stack heavier than the instrument itself.
