IPX5 IPX6 Water Jet Nozzle Set - Quali-IPX™ JNS

The Quali-IPX™ JNS IPX5 IPX6 water jet nozzle set supplies both hose nozzle tests that IEC 60529 specifies for numerals 5 and 6. A single jet handle fitted with a pressure gauge and an adjustable flow valve accepts either nozzle. The 6.3 mm nozzle performs IPX5 testing, and the 12.5 mm nozzle performs IPX6 testing. Both nozzles are made from stainless steel, which preserves the bore geometry that the test relies on.

Labs that already have a regulated water supply need the nozzles, not an additional test console. The Quali-IPX™ JNS attaches to your existing supply through a hose connector, and the operator controls flow and shut-off right at the handle. Qualitest also offers the set as the hand-held component of a full jet test system for teams setting up a station from the ground up. In either case, the wetted geometry follows the requirements in Figure 6 of IEC 60529.

Water jet testing is done on the move rather than from a fixed position. During a test lasting at least three minutes, the operator aims the stream at the enclosure from every practicable direction while keeping a 2.5 m to 3 m distance. With the gauge and valve in hand, conditions can be corrected on the spot, with no second person needed at a supply panel. One technician can therefore carry out the entire sequence.

IPX5 IPX6 Water Jet Nozzle Set - Quali-IPX™ JNS Applications

The Quali-IPX™ JNS is a good fit for any team verifying an IPX5 or IPX6 rating where a water supply is already available. Numerals 5 and 6 apply wherever an enclosure is exposed to a directed stream during service, cleaning, or weather.

  • Outdoor and Industrial Luminaires: evaluates floodlights, high bays, and tunnel fixtures against the ingress requirements of IEC 60598-1
  • Food and Beverage Processing Equipment: qualifies control boxes, sensors, and drive housings that face daily sanitation wash-down
  • Household Appliance Manufacturing: verifies wet-area and outdoor appliances covered by IEC 60335-1
  • Power Tool Manufacturing: tests hand-held motor-operated tools under IEC 60745-1 that see job-site conditions and hose cleaning
  • Large Electrical Cabinets and Enclosures: addresses distribution boards and switchgear housings that are too large to fit inside a chamber
  • Marine and Offshore Equipment: assesses deck electronics and enclosures exposed to green water and hose cleaning
  • Field Verification and Installation Sign-Off: confirms ingress performance on site after mounting, with no need to send units back to a laboratory
  • Laboratory Retrofit and Second Station: adds jet test capability to a water supply already installed for lower IP levels

Standards

The Quali-IPX™ JNS is designed to align with the hose nozzle geometry and delivery conditions defined in the standards below. Each document references the water jet test specified by the IP code.

  • IEC 60335-1 - Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Safety, Part 1: General Requirements
  • IEC 60529 - Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures (IP Code)
  • IEC 60598-1 - Luminaires, Part 1: General Requirements and Tests
  • IEC 60745-1 - Hand-Held Motor-Operated Electric Tools, Safety, Part 1: General Requirements

IPX5 IPX6 Water Jet Nozzle Set - Quali-IPX™ JNS Key Features

Qualitest designed the Quali-IPX™ JNS so that every control an operator touches during a jet test is located on the handle. The set connects to a water supply and requires no other installation.

  • Two Calibrated Nozzle Bores: the 6.3 mm and 12.5 mm nozzles serve numerals 5 and 6 respectively, so a single set covers both jet levels
  • Interchangeable Handle Mounting: both nozzles fit a common jet handle, so switching test levels takes only seconds
  • Integrated Pressure Gauge: displays delivery pressure at the point of use over a 0 to 1.6 bar range, which spans both jet levels with room to spare
  • Handle-Mounted Flow Valve: adjusts delivery rate and shuts off the supply within easy reach, so one operator can correct conditions mid-test
  • Stainless Steel Nozzles: withstand the corrosion and erosion caused by repeated jet cycles and keep the bore dimension the test depends on
  • Hose Connector Supply: attaches to an existing laboratory water supply, so no dedicated console or plumbing work is required
  • Portable Format: reaches cabinets, mounted fixtures, and installed equipment that cannot fit in a chamber or sit on a turntable

Theory and Method

IEC 60529 verifies numerals 5 and 6 using the same device in two configurations. Figure 6 defines a hose nozzle that directs a coherent stream at the enclosure, while the operator moves around the specimen to cover every practicable direction. Numeral 5 calls for the 6.3 mm bore at 12.5 L/min, and numeral 6 calls for the 12.5 mm bore at 100 L/min. Both are applied at a distance of 2.5 m to 3 m for one minute per square meter of exposed surface, with a minimum duration of three minutes.

Bore diameter determines severity. Doubling the bore diameter roughly quadruples the cross-sectional area, and the standard increases flow eightfold across that step, so the numeral 6 stream delivers considerably more mass and momentum to the same seam. This difference explains why an enclosure that passes IPX5 can still fail IPX6, even though the two ratings are only one numeral apart. Changing nozzles instead of throttling a single nozzle keeps each bore at its designed geometry.

Delivery rate is the controlled variable, and pressure follows from it. The method directs the operator to adjust supply pressure until flow reaches the target rate, so the gauge on the handle acts as the feedback the operator monitors during the test. A 0 to 1.6 bar range accommodates the roughly 100 kPa that numeral 6 requires, with headroom above it. Shutting off at the handle instead of at the supply allows the operator to pause between faces without losing the setting.
