IP Test Probe Set (IP1X-IP4X) - Quali-IPX™ TPS

IEC 60529 Access Probes A, B, C and D for Protection Against Access to Hazardous Parts

The Quali-IPX™ TPS IP test probe set brings together all four IEC 61032 access probes in a single kit, sized for verification work under IEC 60529. Probe A is a 50 mm sphere. Probe B is a knurled, jointed test finger measuring 12 mm. Probes C and D are straight rods of 2.5 mm and 1.0 mm. Every probe features a stop face that limits how far it can travel into an opening. Qualitest provides the set to testing laboratories, safety engineers, and compliance teams.

On an access probe, build quality counts for more than the list of dimensions suggests. A probe that flexes, wears at the tip, or loses the geometry of its stop face delivers results that cannot be repeated between operators or between laboratories. The Quali-IPX™ TPS combines acetal resin bodies with stainless or hardened steel elements, so working surfaces keep their size through repeated insertion cycles. Handle dimensions are uniform across probes A, C, and D, at 10 mm in diameter and 100 mm in length.

Access verification complements water ingress testing instead of replacing it. The first characteristic numeral describes what can reach hazardous parts, while the second describes what water can enter. Teams establishing an IP code capability frequently begin with access probes, because they need no water supply, no drainage, and no dedicated floor space. The set can be used at a bench or next to a production line.

IP Test Probe Set (IP1X-IP4X) - Quali-IPX™ TPS Applications

The Quali-IPX™ TPS suits any situation in which a product standard requires verification against access to hazardous parts. The standards this set is designed to serve cover appliances, tools, wiring devices, and electronic apparatus.

  • Wiring Devices and Socket-Outlets: confirms that plugs, socket-outlets, and adaptors covered by IEC 60884 prevent finger and wire access to live contacts
  • Household Appliance Safety: checks whether heating elements, motors, and terminal blocks can be reached through vents and openings, as required by IEC 60335
  • Hand-Held Power Tools: tests tools covered by IEC 60745, where cooling slots sit close to commutators and windings
  • Transportable and Bench Power Tools: qualifies saws, grinders, and drill presses under IEC 61029, where guards and enclosures provide the access protection
  • Audio, Video and Electronic Apparatus: verifies openings and vents on consumer electronics covered by IEC 60065
  • Information Technology Equipment: checks ventilation grilles and connector recesses on hardware covered by IEC 60950
  • Switchgear and Distribution Equipment: confirms clearance at terminals and busbars behind louvered panels
  • Design Review and Incoming Inspection: screens prototypes and supplier parts before they go to a certification laboratory

Standards

The Quali-IPX™ TPS is designed to align with the probe geometries defined in IEC 61032 and applied under Table 4 and Clause 15.2 of IEC 60529. The product standards listed below refer to these same access probes.

  • IEC 60065 - Audio, Video and Similar Electronic Apparatus, Safety Requirements
  • IEC 60335 - Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Safety
  • IEC 60529 - Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures (IP Code)
  • IEC 60745 - Hand-Held Motor-Operated Electric Tools, Safety
  • IEC 60884 - Plugs and Socket-Outlets for Household and Similar Purposes
  • IEC 60950 - Safety of Information Technology Equipment
  • IEC 61029 - Safety of Transportable Motor-Operated Electric Tools
  • IEC 61032 - Protection of Persons and Equipment by Enclosures, Probes for Verification

IP Test Probe Set (IP1X-IP4X) - Quali-IPX™ TPS Key Features

Qualitest delivers the Quali-IPX™ TPS as a matched set instead of individual loose probes. Material selection and stop face geometry are what keep results repeatable.

  • Four Probes in One Kit: covers additional letters A, B, C, and D, so a laboratory can test any access declaration without having to source a missing probe partway through a program
  • Jointed Knurled Test Finger: the 12 mm probe B articulates to reproduce the reach of a human finger, catching enclosures that a rigid probe of the same diameter would pass
  • Acetal and Steel Construction: acetal resin bodies with stainless or hardened steel elements resist tip wear, preserving the dimension on which the verification depends
  • Integral Stop Faces: baffle plates on probes A and B and 35 mm dam spheres on probes C and D set insertion depth regardless of how hard the operator pushes
  • Consistent Handle Geometry: a 10 mm diameter and 100 mm length across probes A, C, and D give the operator the same grip and leverage when switching between probes
  • IEC 61032 Dimensioning: probe geometry follows the standard that defines it, so results carry over between laboratories and between suppliers
  • No Services Required: the probes need no water, drainage, or power, so access checks can be performed at a bench, on a production line, or at a customer site

Theory and Method

The stop face does as much work as the probe tip. Each access probe has a guard behind its working element: a 45 mm baffle plate on probe A, a 50 mm plate on probe B, and 35 mm dam spheres on probes C and D. This face seats against the enclosure surface and sets how deep the probe can travel, which makes insertion depth a characteristic of the probe rather than of operator pressure. Clearance is then evaluated at that fixed depth.

Two distinct tests share the first characteristic numeral, and mixing them up is a common mistake. An object probe checks whether solid foreign bodies are kept out, judged on whether anything penetrates the opening. An access probe checks whether people are kept safe, judged on the clearance between the probe and any hazardous part inside. The Quali-IPX™ TPS covers the access test, which IEC 60529 indexes with additional letters A through D.

Probe B differs from the other three. Its knurled 12 mm finger is jointed, so it bends the way a human finger does and can reach around baffles that would block a rigid rod of the same diameter. An enclosure may pass a straight probe of equal size and still fail probe B once the joints allow it to turn a corner. This behavior explains why the jointed finger appears in more product standards than any other probe in the set.
