The Hydraulic Hollow Cylinder Tester Kit – QualiHydra™ Series applies controlled axial tension to anchors, bolts, and fixings to verify their load-holding capacity in concrete, masonry, and rock. The QualiHydra™ Series provides site engineers and inspectors with a portable solution for conducting proof-load and ultimate-load tests directly at the installation point. Its hollow ram cylinder allows the anchor rod or cable to pass through the center of the piston, ensuring that the test pulls the fastener in line with its working axis. Three capacity options are available for applications ranging from light fixings to heavy structural anchors with capacities of up to 500 kN.

Each kit combines the hollow ram cylinder with a two-speed hydraulic hand pump, three-meter hose assembly, and digital gauge for reading the applied load. The two-speed pump moves the piston rapidly under low pressure and then switches to high pressure as resistance increases. This operation helps shorten test time and reduce operator fatigue. Quality teams, structural engineers, and safety inspectors can use the QualiHydra™ Series to verify that installed anchors meet their design loads before a structure goes into service.

A protective case houses the cylinder, pump, hose, and gauge for convenient transportation between sites. Theory and Method

Hydraulic load testing is based on Pascal's principle, which states that pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally in all directions. The hand pump pushes oil through the hose into the cylinder, where hydraulic pressure acts on the piston's effective area to generate force. Since force equals pressure multiplied by area, relatively modest hand effort at the pump can produce tens or hundreds of kilonewtons at the ram. The digital gauge displays system pressure, which corresponds directly to the axial load applied to the anchor under test.

The hollow ram design allows the anchor rod or cable to pass through a bore extending through the piston. A single-acting hollow ram cylinder features a hollow saddle on top of the hollow piston, along with a male coupler and dust cap at the hydraulic port (Fig 4). The operator passes the fastener through the cylinder, secures it above the ram with a nut or grip, and positions the cylinder base against the substrate or a load-spreading bridge. As the piston extends, it pushes against the surface while pulling the rod upward, placing the anchor under pure axial tension. This in-line loading arrangement reproduces the service condition that the fixing must resist.

The cylinder is single-acting, meaning hydraulic pressure drives the piston outward while an external load returns it when the pressure is released. The two-speed pump moves the piston rapidly under low pressure during the approach stage and then shifts to high pressure as the final load is built. The load-holding valve maintains the ram position without drifting after the target load is reached. This combination allows one technician to build, hold, and release a precise test load manually.

Setup and Operation

Before beginning the test, position the pump horizontally on a flat surface and check the oil level. Remove the transit plug from the top of the tank and install the breather in its place. This allows the full oil volume to be used during testing (Fig 1). Fill the reservoir to approximately 10 mm below the tank top using ISO VG 32 or ISO VG 46 mineral hydraulic oil, while keeping the cylinder fully retracted during filling.

The system should be bled before the first test. Connect the cylinder to the pump and position it below the pump with its pressure ports facing upward. Open the bleed screw and operate the cylinder three to four times through its full travel so that trapped air can return to the reservoir (Fig 5). When a small cylinder is connected using long hoses, perform the bleeding process with a shorter hose first if the hose volume is greater than the cylinder volume.

To advance the ram, turn the release knob clockwise and operate the pump handle (Fig 2). The pump automatically changes from high-flow, low-pressure operation to low-flow, high-pressure operation as resistance increases. The valve holds the applied load, preventing the ram from retracting on its own.

To release the load, slowly turn the release knob anti-clockwise by no more than one to two turns, allowing the piston to retract in a controlled manner (Fig 3). Fully retract the piston after each test, install dust caps when disconnecting the hoses, and refit the transit plug before transporting the equipment.

Return Policy:

Qualitest USA may accept return of purchased merchandise within North America for refund or credit under the following conditions -

  • There may be an additional restocking fee charged to the transaction if items are already shipped to customer.
  • Goods must be returned to Qualitest USA within 5 days of the date of the receipt of the purchased goods.
  • All freight, duties, customs, and other related shipping charges for the returned merchandise are borne by the purchaser. Shipments made freight collect will be refused.
  • Merchandise must be returned properly packaged in brand new, salable condition, along with original packaging and all documentation, accessories and certificates.
  • Purchaser has confirmed return authorization directly with Qualitest.
