Digital Geosynthetic Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG D

The QualiGTX™ TG D digital geosynthetic thickness gauge determines the nominal thickness of geotextiles, geomembranes, geonets, and drainage geocomposites using a compact 500 N load frame. A stepper motor operates the cantilever through a transmission assembly, lowering the presser foot at a controlled speed until the closed-loop control system detects the specified load. Quality control teams and materials testing laboratories can verify roll materials against established specifications without requiring the bench space of a full-size thickness testing apparatus.

The instrument includes two presser feet with different contact areas to accommodate standard testing requirements. The 25 cm² presser foot weighs 5 N, while the 100 cm² foot weighs 20 N. Both apply a pressure of 2 kPa to the specimen surface within ±0.01 kPa. A φ112 mm reference plate (base) supports the specimen beneath the presser foot and maintains parallel contact surfaces throughout the 0 to 12 mm measurement range. The digital display provides a thickness resolution of 0.001 mm.

A 10-inch LCD displays the loading sequence and thickness-versus-load curve in real time, allowing operators to monitor specimen compression throughout the test rather than relying solely on a final reading. Completed test records remain stored in memory for editing and further analysis, supporting laboratory calculations of mean thickness, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation across multiple specimens. With a weight of 56 kg and a bench footprint of 740 × 470 mm, the QualiGTX™ TG D offers digital thickness measurement in a space-efficient design.

Digital Geosynthetic Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG D Applications

The QualiGTX™ TG D is designed for production facilities and testing laboratories that routinely measure geosynthetic thickness as part of quality assurance and material verification.

  • Geotextile Production Quality Control: Measures woven and nonwoven geotextile roll materials at 2 kPa using the 25 cm² presser foot to verify production batches against published product specifications.

  • Geomembrane Manufacturing: Checks the thickness of smooth polymeric liners during extrusion, helping identify sheets outside specified tolerances before winding.

  • Geonet and Drainage Geocomposite Testing: Uses the 100 cm² presser foot to compress deformable cores and record thickness changes as the applied load increases.

  • Landfill and Containment Projects: Verifies that liner, cushioning, and cover materials meet specified thickness requirements before installation.

  • Road and Railway Subgrade Applications: Checks separation and reinforcement geotextiles supplied for compliance with project and contract specifications.

  • Hydraulic and Irrigation Engineering: Measures canal liners, reservoir membranes, and dam-facing materials where thickness data contributes to permeability and tensile calculations.

  • Commercial Testing Laboratories: Conducts incoming shipment acceptance tests using force and displacement measurements traceable to a Class 1 measuring system, with force accuracy of ±1% and displacement accuracy of ±0.5% of the indicated value.

  • Product Development Laboratories: Evaluates the compression behavior of new fiber blends and core designs through recorded load curves.

Standards

The QualiGTX™ TG D determines geosynthetic thickness in accordance with recognized international test methods.

  • ASTM D5199 – Standard Test Methods for Measuring the Nominal Thickness of Geosynthetics

  • ISO 9863 – Geosynthetics: Determination of Thickness at Specified Pressures

Digital Geosynthetic Thickness Gauge – QualiGTX™ TG D Key Features

The QualiGTX™ TG D combines a stepper motor-driven load frame with digital closed-loop measurement to provide controlled geosynthetic thickness testing in a compact benchtop configuration.

  • Stepper Motor-Driven Loading: Moves the cantilever and presser foot through a geared transmission at a consistent, repeatable speed, reducing the loading variations associated with manual thickness gauges.

  • Digital Closed-Loop Control: Monitors and adjusts force and position in real time to maintain the pressure required by the selected test method.

  • 10-Inch LCD with Real-Time Curve Display: Plots the relationship between thickness and applied load during testing, providing immediate insight into specimen compression behavior.

  • Consistent Resolution Across the Full Range: Maintains a resolution of 1/300,000 of full capacity without range switching, supporting precise readings at both low and high loads.

  • Class 1 Measurement Accuracy: Maintains force accuracy within ±1% and displacement accuracy within ±0.5% of the indicated value.

  • 0.001 mm Thickness Resolution: Measures thin membranes and coatings across a 0 to 12 mm range with the resolution required for precise thickness evaluation.

  • Two Presser Foot Contact Areas: Provides 25 cm² and 100 cm² contact areas for testing general geosynthetics, geospacers, and drainage composites with one instrument.

  • Post-Test Data Editing and Analysis: Stores completed tests in the controller for review, correction, and recalculation without requiring the test to be repeated.

  • Automatic Overload Protection: Stops the drive when the applied load exceeds 110% of capacity, helping protect the load cell and transmission assembly from operator error.

  • Electronic Travel Limit Protection: Restricts crosshead movement electronically to prevent the presser assembly from contacting the reference plate.

  • Fast and Slow Travel Control: Offers programmable movement speeds and jog operation for rapid approach and precise final contact.

Theory and Method

The measured thickness of geosynthetic materials varies with the applied load. Nonwoven geotextiles, geonets, and drainage cores can compress as pressure increases, making the contact area, applied pressure, and dwell time essential parts of a valid test result. Standard test methods define these conditions before thickness is measured as the perpendicular distance between the reference plate and presser foot after the specified load has been maintained for the required period. The QualiGTX™ TG D manages these parameters through its control software, reducing dependence on manual adjustments by the operator.

Specimen pressure is calculated by dividing the applied force by the presser foot contact area. This relationship explains why the two presser feet have different weights while producing the same initial pressure. The 25 cm² foot weighs 5 N, and the 100 cm² foot weighs 20 N; both establish a pressure of 2 kPa. After the initial seating load is applied, the motor-driven frame increases the force as required. With a maximum capacity of 500 N, the instrument can generate a pressure of 200 kPa when using the 25 cm² presser foot, accommodating the upper pressure step specified in multi-pressure testing methods.

The closed-loop control system continuously regulates the applied force to maintain the target load. A load cell sends measured force values to the controller, which adjusts the motor position in response rather than assuming that a commanded movement will automatically produce the required force. The system maintains a resolution of one part in 300,000 of full capacity across the complete measurement range without internal range switching. Consequently, the 5 N seating load can be resolved with the same relative precision as a 400 N compression step. Force accuracy remains within ±1% of the indicated value, while displacement accuracy remains within ±0.5%.
