Abrasive Cutting Machine – QualiCut™ 6100S

The Abrasive Cutting Machine – QualiCut™ 6100S is designed for high-precision material cutting across a wide range of applications. It provides powerful cutting performance, dependable operation, and easy-to-use controls for efficient specimen preparation. The system features a main unit, control panel, advanced cutting chamber, and integrated cooling system, providing efficient and cost-effective cutting performance.

The QualiCut™ 6100S allows users to adjust cutting modes, cutting speeds, and cutting paths according to specific sample preparation requirements. Advanced features such as automatic diagnostics, integrated safety functions, and real-time operating guidance help improve cutting accuracy, operator convenience, and sample quality.

Suitable for college laboratories, research facilities, and industrial environments, the QualiCut™ 6100S is a reliable solution for precise material sectioning and metallographic specimen preparation.

Mechanics of Abrasive Material Removal

At high magnification, an abrasive cutting machine removes material through the interaction of thousands of hard abrasive grains bonded to a rotating cutting wheel. Each abrasive grain passes through three primary stages during the cutting process:

  • Gliding and Rubbing: As the rotating cutting wheel contacts the workpiece, abrasive grains initially slide across the surface. This creates friction and localized heat before significant material removal begins.

  • Plastic Displacement and Plowing: As cutting depth increases, the abrasive grain presses into the material and forces metal laterally along the groove, creating localized deformation around the cutting path.

  • Chip Formation and Cutting: At sufficient penetration depth, the abrasive grain removes microscopic chips from the material, producing the desired cutting action.

When sectioning softer and more ductile metals, the fab factor helps describe the relationship between actual chip formation and lateral material displacement. The QualiCut™ 6100S abrasive cutting machine is designed to support controlled cutting conditions that promote efficient material removal while helping minimize excessive friction and heat generation.

Modeling and Cutting Process Mechanics

Material scientists and laboratory professionals can use cutting mechanics and process calculations to evaluate abrasive sectioning conditions and establish suitable operating parameters. Key areas include:

  • Energy-Splitting Equations: These calculations divide cutting energy into rubbing, plowing, and cutting components, helping determine suitable operating conditions for challenging alloys and materials.

  • Micro-Scale Scratch Models: Computer-based models can simulate abrasive grain interactions with a material surface to evaluate localized stress, deformation, and material removal.

  • Wheel Wear Predictions: Calculations can be used to assess abrasive wheel wear over time, including the performance of a 350 × 2.5 × 32 mm cutting disc during repeated sectioning operations.

  • Data-Driven Estimations: When cutting conditions vary, automatic diagnostic functions can assist with evaluating operating conditions and selecting suitable cutting parameters for consistent sectioning results.

These mechanics provide a foundation for understanding how an abrasive cutting machine interacts with different materials during precision sectioning.

Process Parameter Control and Sample Integrity

Achieving a clean, accurate cut with minimal thermal or mechanical damage requires careful control of cutting parameters. The QualiCut™ 6100S provides adjustable operating controls to help maintain consistent cutting conditions and protect sample integrity.

  • Adjustable Travel Speeds: Feed speed can be adjusted from 0.1 mm/m to 15 mm/m, allowing operators to select suitable cutting rates based on material type, specimen dimensions, and sectioning requirements.

  • High-Speed Spindle Rotation: The cutting wheel operates at 2800 RPM, providing rapid abrasive action for workpieces up to 100 mm thick.

  • Programmable Cutting Paths: User-friendly touch-pad controls allow operators to configure cutting paths and sectioning patterns according to specific specimen requirements.

  • High-Volume Coolant Delivery: A 60 L coolant pump and integrated cooling system help manage heat within the cutting chamber, supporting cleaner cuts and reducing the risk of thermal damage to specimens.

  • Safety Features: Integrated safety functions and Schneider safety locks provide additional protection during cutting operations.

The combination of controlled cutting parameters, abrasive sectioning mechanics, coolant delivery, and safety features makes the QualiCut™ 6100S suitable for precise material sectioning in metallography laboratories, research facilities, educational institutions, and industrial environments.
