Material Removal Physics & Preston Mechanics
Metallographic specimen preparation requires controlled removal of surface material to produce a smooth, deformation-free surface suitable for microscopic examination. QualiGP™ Metallography Grinding & Polishing Machines use rotating platens with wheel sizes of φ203 mm, φ250 mm, or φ300 mm. These platens accommodate abrasive media such as silicon carbide papers, diamond suspensions, and fine alumina slurries for progressive material removal and surface refinement.
Material removal takes place through three primary abrasive interactions:
-
Ploughing: An abrasive particle penetrates the specimen surface and displaces material laterally, producing microscopic furrows with raised ridges along the contact path.
-
Cutting: A sharp abrasive edge penetrates the material and removes microscopic chips from the specimen surface.
-
Dead Metal Zone Formation: Material can become temporarily trapped beneath the abrasive edge, increasing friction and localized heat at the contact area.
Integrated water-flushing channels continuously remove loose metal swarf and help control heat during grinding. Depending on the model, platen speeds can reach up to 1000 or 1400 r/min.
The Preston Removal Equation
The Preston equation describes material removal in relation to applied pressure, relative surface velocity, and a material-dependent removal coefficient:
dH / dt = Kp · P · V
Here, dH/dt represents the material removal rate, P is the applied pressure, V is the relative linear velocity between the abrasive surface and specimen, and Kp represents a coefficient influenced by the abrasive system and material characteristics.
Variable-speed drives allow operators to adjust platen velocity according to the preparation stage and material requirements. The QualiGP™ 4 / 4S features a 2.1 kW drive motor, while the QualiGP™ 2 / 3 series uses 1.1 kW drive motors, providing controlled abrasive movement for efficient specimen preparation.
Contact Mechanics & Pneumatic Force Control
During polishing, abrasive particles interact with the specimen through a polishing cloth or resilient pad. The contact area distributes the applied force across the specimen surface, helping maintain controlled contact and reduce edge rounding during preparation.
Precise force control is important for producing consistent specimen surfaces:
-
Single-Point Loading (5–60 N): Available on the QualiGP™ 2, 3, and 4 series, pneumatic heads apply controlled force to individual specimen mounts while accommodating variations in specimen height.
-
Central Force Loading (20–200 N): Available on the QualiGP™ 4 / 4S, central force loading applies pressure through a specimen holder, keeping multiple samples aligned within a common plane for efficient preparation.
-
Manual Pressure Sensing (0–60 N): The QualiGP™ M-1Pro+ provides digital force monitoring, allowing operators to observe applied pressure during manual grinding and polishing.
Sequential Metallographic Preparation Workflow & Automated Dosing
Metallographic specimen preparation progresses through increasingly fine abrasive grades. Each stage removes the surface irregularities and scratches produced during the preceding stage.
-
Stage 1: Primary Rough Grinding: Mounted specimens are flattened using coarse abrasive papers from P120 to P320. Platen speeds of 150, 300, or 600 r/min can be used according to the preparation requirements.
-
Stage 2: Fine Grinding: Progress through finer abrasive papers from P400 to P2400 or use structured diamond discs. Rotating the specimen approximately 90 degrees between abrasive stages helps identify when the previous scratch pattern has been removed.
-
Stage 3: Precision Polishing: Replace grinding papers with woven or velvet polishing pads and diamond fluids ranging from 3 micron to 1 micron for progressively finer surface finishing. The QualiGP™ SF5 Slurry Feeder provides controlled fluid dosing to maintain consistent lubrication while reducing unnecessary slurry consumption.
-
Stage 4: Chemical Etching: After polishing, an appropriate etching solution can be applied to reveal grain boundaries, phases, and other microstructural features for microscopic examination.

Finite element analysis supports the structural design, while quick-change magnetic platen systems simplify abrasive changes. Integrated flushing channels help remove swarf and debris from the working area during specimen preparation.
Key Parameters for Surface Quality Optimization
Consistent metallographic surface quality depends on the controlled balance of several operating parameters:
-
Platen Speed & Relative Rotation: The relationship between specimen-head rotation and platen rotation influences material removal and surface finish. Counter-rotation, where the head rotates opposite to the platen, supports faster material removal, while co-rotation can provide more controlled finishing. The QualiGP™ 4/4S offers adjustable platen speeds from 0 to 1000 r/min.
-
Applied Downward Force: Controlled pneumatic loading helps maintain consistent specimen contact with the abrasive surface. Single-point force ranges from 5–60 N, while central force loading on the QualiGP™ 4/4S ranges from 20–200 N. Proper force control helps reduce specimen movement, uneven contact, and subsurface deformation.
-
Automated Slurry Dosing: The QualiGP™ SF5 Slurry Feeder provides controlled abrasive slurry delivery throughout manual, semi-automatic, and automatic preparation cycles. Consistent dosing supports stable lubrication and helps minimize unnecessary consumption of diamond suspensions.
-
Z-Axis Load Monitoring: Real-time force monitoring provides continuous information about the load applied to the specimen. Maintaining a controlled force throughout the preparation cycle helps improve process consistency and repeatability of the final surface finish.
