Semi Automatic Melt Flow Indexer (MFI) – QualiFi™ 6000SA
QualiFi™ 6000SA is a semi-automatic, safety-enhanced melt flow indexer developed for B2B plastics testing laboratories that require higher throughput, reduced operator involvement, and improved safety compared to a standard automatic weight-loading instrument. It measures MFR across 0.1–100 g/10 min and MVR up to 3000 cm³/10 min at temperatures from 50 to 450 °C. This melt flow index tester integrates pneumatic material compaction, pneumatic residual extrusion, pneumatic barrel cleaning, and a weight fall-prevention guard within the QualiFi™ Series platform—delivering a safer, faster, and more repeatable testing workflow than the QualiFi™ 5000. CE certified and CNAS proficiency-verified, the QualiFi™ 6000SA is a reliable upgrade melt flow index tester for high-frequency QC and production monitoring environments across North America.
The QualiFi™ 6000SA is a pneumatic-assisted semi-automatic melt flow indexer designed for plastics testing environments where test throughput, operator safety, and measurement repeatability are higher priorities than compact benchtop design. Built on the QualiFi™ Series platform, it retains the core measurement precision, dual PID temperature control, and software capabilities of the QualiFi™ 5000 while adding pneumatic-assisted functions and a weight fall-prevention guard that reduce manual intervention, minimize human error, and improve operator safety during frequent testing cycles.
The weight is manually selected by the operator but automatically lifted and lowered without physical handling once selected, similar to the QualiFi™ 5000 lifting mechanism. A weight fall-prevention guard is added in the 6000SA, physically securing the weight stack and reducing the risk of uncontrolled weight movement during operation. Material compaction is performed pneumatically with adjustable force and time (10–50 kg), removing variability from manual compaction and improving repeatability for high-viscosity materials.
Pneumatic residual material extrusion uses adjustable pneumatic load (10–50 kg) to remove remaining polymer from the barrel after each test, reducing between-test cleaning time and effort. Pneumatic barrel cleaning completes the post-test cycle using compressed air to clear internal residue, eliminating the need for manual rod cleaning typically required on standard melt flow index testers. These three pneumatic functions reduce total turnaround time between tests, making the QualiFi™ 6000SA suitable for high-frequency QC environments where multiple tests are performed per shift.
All core QualiFi™ Series platform features are retained, including the 10.1-inch HD touch screen, 50–450 °C dual PID temperature control, ±0.2 °C temperature accuracy, 0.002 mm piston displacement resolution, 8 customizable test plans, 5,000-group USB data storage with DMS software, optional PC two-way control, and multi-language interface support. The floor-standing design (580×480×1450 mm) accommodates the pneumatic assembly and weight guard system and requires a compressed air supply above 0.6 MPa.

Theory and Method
Melt Flow Rate Measurement Principle
The QualiFi™ 6000SA operates based on the extrusion plastometer principle defined in ISO 1133 and ASTM D1238. A thermoplastic resin sample is introduced into a heated barrel and stabilized at the specified test temperature. A piston applies a defined load, forcing the molten polymer through a standard die (Φ2.095 mm) located at the base of the barrel.
MFR (mass method, Procedure A) is determined by measuring the mass of extrudate collected at timed intervals. MVR (volume methods A and B) is calculated from piston displacement over a defined time period. The QualiFi™ 6000SA automates weight lifting, timing control, cutting, and result calculation, while also integrating pneumatic compaction, pneumatic residual extrusion, and pneumatic barrel cleaning. These additions reduce the number of manual operations per test cycle compared to the QualiFi™ 5000.
Pneumatic Compaction System
Material compaction, the process of pressing the loaded polymer charge into the barrel prior to testing, is performed pneumatically on the QualiFi™ 6000SA with adjustable load and time (10–50 kg). In conventional melt flow index testers, this step is carried out manually using a feeding rod, which can introduce variation in applied force and compaction duration.
The pneumatic system provides a consistent and repeatable compaction force across all test cycles, independent of operator technique. This improves run-to-run repeatability of MFR/MVR results, particularly for high-viscosity polymers and powder materials where pre-test density uniformity is critical.
Pneumatic Residual Extrusion and Barrel Cleaning
After each test cycle, remaining polymer in the barrel must be removed before the next sample is introduced. The QualiFi™ 6000SA performs this in two pneumatic stages:
First, pneumatic residual extrusion applies an adjustable load (10–50 kg) to expel remaining polymer from the barrel and die, replacing manual push-rod operation used in conventional systems.
Second, pneumatic barrel cleaning uses compressed air to remove residual material from the internal barrel surface.
Together, these steps significantly reduce post-test turnaround time, minimize operator effort, and reduce exposure to high-temperature components, strengthening the safety-oriented design of the 6000SA.
Weight Fall-Prevention Guard
In floor-standing melt flow indexers, the weight stack is positioned at an elevated height, creating a potential risk of uncontrolled descent during setup, weight adjustment, or mechanical irregularities.
The QualiFi™ 6000SA incorporates a dedicated weight fall-prevention guard that physically restricts the weight stack movement and prevents uncontrolled descent events. This hardware safety mechanism is not included in the QualiFi™ 5000 and is specifically designed for the taller floor-standing structure of the 6000SA.
Dual PID Temperature Control and High-Precision Displacement
The QualiFi™ 6000SA retains the same core temperature control and measurement architecture as the QualiFi™ 5000 platform. A high-temperature heating system and sensor assembly rated for continuous operation from 50 to 450 °C is controlled by a dual PID temperature regulation system.
This ensures rapid, overshoot-free heating, stable multi-zone thermal distribution with a temperature gradient of less than ±0.1 °C, and recovery to stable conditions within 2 minutes after sample loading.
Piston displacement is measured with a resolution of 0.002 mm and a maximum indication error of ±0.02 mm. Timer resolution is 0.001 s, supporting precise MVR calculation across a measurement range of 0.01 to 3000 cm³/10 min.
