Vicat Needle Apparatus
Vicat Needle Apparatus for Cement, Mortar, and Gypsum Testing
The Vicat Needle Apparatus is used to determine the setting time and standard consistency of cement and mortar in quality control and cement testing laboratories. The Vicat consistency test provides a reliable method for evaluating whether cement, mortar, and gypsum meet specified requirements for consistency and setting time.
These test methods determine the setting time of hydraulic cement using a Vicat needle. Two testing methods are available. Test Method A uses a manually operated standard Vicat apparatus as the reference method. Test Method B allows the use of an automatic Vicat apparatus that has demonstrated acceptable performance according to the qualification requirements of the applicable method.
Standard Consistency of Cement
Standard consistency refers to the consistency of cement paste that allows the Vicat needle or plunger to penetrate to a point 5 to 7 mm from the bottom of the Vicat mould under the specified test conditions. Determining standard consistency is an essential step in cement testing and setting-time evaluation.
QUALITEST - TESTING offers a complete range of Vicat Needle Apparatus systems, including manual, single-station semi-automatic, and fully automatic models with multiple testing stations. These systems are designed to support consistent and efficient cement, mortar, and gypsum testing in laboratory environments.

ASTM C191: Standard Test Methods for Time of Setting of Hydraulic Cement by Vicat Needle
Vicat Test Measurement Principle
The Vicat test measures the penetration resistance of a standardized needle or rod assembly into a fresh cementitious mixture at specified time intervals. It is used to determine the setting behavior of hydraulic cement, mortar, and gypsum as the material changes from a fluid or plastic state to a rigid, load-bearing structure.
When dry cement is mixed with water, the resulting paste initially has low resistance, allowing the weighted Vicat needle assembly to penetrate deeply into the specimen. As cement hydration progresses, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) products form and develop an increasingly interconnected structure within the paste.
As this internal structure develops, the cement paste becomes progressively stiffer and offers greater resistance to needle penetration. The Vicat apparatus records the penetration depth at defined elapsed times, allowing the initial and final setting behavior of the material to be determined through direct physical measurement.
This testing method provides objective data for evaluating cement setting time, consistency, and hardening characteristics, supporting quality control and specification compliance in cement and construction-material laboratories.

ASTM C187 Method: A 10 mm consistency plunger is positioned on the surface of the cement paste and released. The normal consistency is achieved when the plunger penetrates 10 ± 1 mm below the surface within 30 seconds.
-
EN 196-3 Method: Normal consistency is achieved when the plunger stops 6 ± 2 mm above the bottom glass plate, corresponding to a penetration depth of 34 ± 2 mm.
Initial and Final Setting Time Determination
Once the standard consistency water percentage is locked in, a fresh batch is mixed. Elapsed time is tracked starting the second dry powder contacts water.

Vicat306 – Single-Station with Paper Drum Recorder: Automates needle penetration at preset time intervals and records penetration depth mechanically on a rotating paper drum chart, providing a physical record of the test results.
-
Vicat360 – Single-Station with Color LCD Display: Uses an electronic linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) sensor to monitor needle displacement. Penetration data and curves are displayed in real time on the color LCD screen and can be exported using dedicated software.
-
QualiVicat™ II – Single-Station Automated Workstation: Features motorized needle indexing to change the penetration location on the specimen after each testing cycle. An integrated cleaning and drying brush automatically cleans the needle tip between measurements, supporting unattended testing from the initial mix through the final setting stage.
-
